Wildfires have recently impacted areas of British Columbia, prompting the Province to declare a state of emergency on August 8th.
In response, Telus has committed $2 million.
The capital is earmarked for network connectivity, data top-ups and bill credits for affected customers, and donations and support to charities such as Salvation Army BC, according to a statement.
“Our thoughts are with those affected by the devastating wildfires in British Columbia, and we want them to know that TELUS is here to help,” remarked Victor Dodig, chief executive officer of TELUS.
Technicians are working to keep network infrastructure operational under harsh conditions, says Dodig, while 50 GB of free wireless data has been supplied to evacuated TELUS and Koodo postpaid mobility customers with credits provided for Internet, TV, home phone, and SmartHome Security bills.
“Our team has a long history of supporting communities in times of uncertainty and duress,” he commented.
“As fire crews continue to battle the flames, Telus is committed to doing what we can to help affected British Columbians through this challenging period,” the CEO stated, “including supporting relief organizations, providing mental health and wellbeing services, delivering vital on-the-ground support, and working around the clock to keep everyone connected.”
Since 2000, Telus has invested over $300 million in emergency response and community recovery, including $125 million toward wildfire and flood relief.
This year, Telus has been undergoing a “transformation.”
The local telecom titan has also been powering remote and rural households throughout the province with high-speed internet. Canada’s Connectivity Strategy promises Internet speeds of 50 megabits per second download and 10 Mbps upload; today, 97% of B.C. households meet this threshold, compared to a nationwide average of 79% in 2014.
