SFU and Moment Energy Collab to Boost Clean Power for Compute

March 17, 2026 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Vancouver-based battery repurposing innovator Moment Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding with Simon Fraser University to support the institution’s growing data centre needs and sustainability goals.

The MOU focuses on collaborative opportunities for Moment Energy and SFU to identify opportunities to deploy advanced energy storage to boost power availability for SFU’s data centres and research facilities and explore ways to diversify power use, according to a statement from the organizations.

Areas of collaboration are expected to include the development of clean-energy infrastructure, R&D on storage for AI and quantum computing, and student workforce development.

Gurmesh Sidhu, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of Moment Energy, says that the B.C. cleantech upstart is “proud to partner with SFU, a leader in research and sustainability, to explore how our North American-made energy storage solutions can help power the next generation of data infrastructure like the Cedar supercomputer, while advancing the clean energy transition, promoting local innovation, and enhancing energy security for North America’s high-performance computing needs.”

Moment Energy is a member of the BC Tech Association.

BC Tech is the largest member-led technology non-profit in British Columbia, and we’re dedicated to turning startups and scaleups into the anchor companies of tomorrow. Our work supports members to grow and diversify their talent pool, acquire new customers, access capital and accelerate their scaleup journey. Technology is a key industry for BC’s future and builds resiliency in every industry. Today, every company is a tech company. Join now.

The MOU includes a future pilot for SFU’s Cedar Supercomputing Centre to expand with on-site battery backup.

“This partnership with Moment Energy will help us take the Cedar Supercomputing Centre to new heights of efficiency and performance, as we continue to support research and innovation across Canada with our secure, high-performance data centre infrastructure hosted right here at SFU,” stated Dugan O’Neil, SFU’s Vice-President, Research, and Innovation.

Moment recently bolstered its technical bench with the appointments of veteran battery scientist Dr. Kandler Smith as Technical Fellow and former Tesla engineering leader Dorian West as Strategic Advisor.

“We are excited to be working with the top minds in the world as Moment Energy pushes the boundaries of battery performance as we continue to scale gigawatt-hours globally,” commented Moment chief executive Edward Chiang, who was in December named Fasken’s 2025 Climate Tech Founder of the Year.

Since launching in 2019, Moment Energy has secured more than $60 million in combined equity and debt financing—including a Series A round co-led by the Amazon Climate Pledge Fund and Voyager Ventures, with participation from TD Innovation Partners—to scale production of its second-life battery technology.

The firm recently was recognized as a Scale-up Venture of the Year finalist for the inaugural Canadian Cleantech Awards.

With campuses in British Columbia’s three largest cities, SFU has 10 faculties that deliver 368 undergraduate degree programs and 149 graduate degree programs for more than 37,000 students each year. The university boasts more than 200,000 alumni residing in 145 countries.
